Jon Lee Anderson in Zimbabwe

Informative background and analysis of current events there weaved into an entertaining investigative piece. Excellent stuff.

Shorter Byron "Duke of" York

Pray tell, why cannot all bloggers be in St. Paul with major magazine press credentials? Jeeves - fetch my brandy and slippers!

Shorter Jonah 'the Amazing' Goldberg

Hear ye, hear ye!! Gather round fellow citizens!! Stand in Awe as I use my analytical powers and mellifluous prose to spend 350 words in elucidation of the blindingly obvious!!

Obama on Palin

Good, timely, sincere response. Noting that his mother was about the same age as Palin's daughter makes the sincerity self-evident. Even K to L-O must recognize.

The New McCain

An insightful focus group member comment in this post from Steve Benen highlights the lost opportunity of the Democratic convention:

"Right now I'm wondering where the John McCain I really liked in 2000 went, what happened to the moderate? This John McCain has the look of someone who is being manipulated -- probably by Karl Rove."

None of the major speakers - Biden, the Clintons, or Obama - even alluded to this obvious change in McCain. The McCain running for president isn't the same man who won fans across the nation (and across party lines) in 2000.

In any event, the feeding frenzy over the Sarah Palin "vetting" might make this a moot point.

Rosenbaum on Tourneur

Jonathan's Rosenbaum's intentions for his new "archival" blog aren't very clear - but he recently highlighted an excellent overview of the work of Jacques Tourneur that written for the Chicago Reader in 2003.

Tourneur is an interesting figure - when everyone says someone is underappreciated, are they really? Granted, Tourneur isn't a household name, but he is a director whose work is easily accessible - many of his films show frequently on TCM (just set up a Tivo director search for him), and the Val Lewton box set contains 3 of his greatest films.
